The Madman’s Daughter by Megan Shepherd Book Review

Amazon | GoodReads

Goodreads Synopsis

“Sixteen-year-old Juliet Moreau has built a life for herself in London—working as a maid, attending church on Sundays, and trying not to think about the scandal that ruined her life. After all, no one ever proved the rumors about her father’s gruesome experiments. But when she learns he is alive and continuing his work on a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations are true.

Accompanied by her father’s handsome young assistant, Montgomery, and an enigmatic castaway, Edward—both of whom she is deeply drawn to—Juliet travels to the island, only to discover the depths of her father’s madness: He has experimented on animals so that they resemble, speak, and behave as humans. And worse, one of the creatures has turned violent and is killing the island’s inhabitants. Torn between horror and scientific curiosity, Juliet knows she must end her father’s dangerous experiments and escape her jungle prison before it’s too late. Yet as the island falls into chaos, she discovers the extent of her father’s genius—and madness—in her own blood.

Inspired by H. G. Wells’s classic The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Madman’s Daughter is a dark and breathless Gothic thriller about the secrets we’ll do anything to know and the truths we’ll go to any lengths to protect.”

My Review

First let’s all take a second and admire the cover of The Madman’s Daughter. It’s gorgeous and just speaks to me 💕

Juliet Moreau is a strong willed and smart young woman.  She may appear a lady but her dark thoughts are anything but.

Montgomery is a bit rough around the edges but handsome non the less. He has known Juliet since he was a boy and has never forgotten her. He remains a caring soul even given his up bringing and what he feels obligated to do.

Edward Prince is a castaway who finds himself in Juliet and Montgomerys company. He seems to have an instant connection with Juliet and it’s as if there is a bond between them. He is handsome, dark, mysterious and has more than a few secrets.

Juliet grew up thinking her father was dead after being shunned from society for unethical medical practices. Since her mothers passing, she has fallen to the bottom of the society ladder with very little to claim as her own.

After stumbling upon proof of her father actually being alive, she is reunited with her childhood friend and fathers apprentice. Montgomery reluctantly agrees to bring her to her father. Nothing could prepare Juliet for the secrets she would find on her fathers island or the horrible thruths that would come to light.

The Madman’s Daughter is the story of a young girls quest for her fathers acceptance, to be loved, and to simply be understood. It was exciting and at times nerve wrecking but I can’t wait to experience more of her story.  The end left me wanting more and needing to know what the author has in store for Juliet Moreau.

You might be wondering since it sounds like I loved the book so much then why did I only give it 4 stars? It had a trope that I hate hate hate….the love triangle☠  like I get it but gahh i hate them so much …..

4/5 Stars
