How to Love a Duke in Ten Days by Kerrigan Byrne _ Book Review

Amazon  Goodreads

These men are dark, bold, and brave. And there is only one woman who can bring them to their knees…

Famed and brilliant, Lady Alexandra Lane has always known how to look out for to herself. But nobody would ever expect that she has darkness in her past—one that she pays a blackmailer to keep buried. Now, with her family nearing bankruptcy, Alexandra strikes upon a solution: Get married to one of the empire’s most wealthy eligible bachelors. Even if he does have the reputation of a devil.

Piers Gedrick Atherton, the Duke of Redmayne, is seeking revenge and the first step is securing a bride. Winning a lady’s hand is not so easy, however, for a man known as the Terror of Torcliff. Then, Alexandra enters his life like a bolt of lightning. When she proposes marriage, Piers knows that, like him, trouble haunts her footsteps. But her gentleness, sharp wit, independent nature, and incredible beauty awakens every fierce desire within him. He will do whatever it takes to keep her safe in his arms.

About Kerrigan

Kerrigan has done many things topay the bills, from law enforcement to belly dance instructor. Now she’s finally able to have the career she’d decided upon at thirteen when she announced to her very skeptical family that she was going to “grow up to be a romance novelist.” Whether she’s writing about Celtic Druids, Victorian bad boys, or brash Irish FBI Agents, Kerrigan uses her borderline-obsessive passion for history, her extensive Celtic ancestry, and her love of Shakespeare in almost every story.

She lives in a little Victorian coast town on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State with her wonderful husband. When she’s not writing you can find her sailing, beach combing, kayaking, visiting wineries, breweries, and restaurants with friends, and hiking…okay…wandering aimlessly clenching bear spray in the mountains.

[I received a physical arc for an honest review]

How to Love a Duke in Ten Days is the first book in Kerrigan Byrne‘s new historical romance series, Devil You Know. This is my first book by the author and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I most likely wouldn’t have picked up this book on my own, but I am so glad I did.

“He could break her.
He could protect her.
She feared him.
She needed him.
She wanted…this.”

Our leading heroine, Lady Alexandra Lane has been dealing with the trauma of a sexual assault for ten years and a blackmailer who knows her darkest secret. When she runs out of money she decides she has no other choice but to marry not for love but for convenience. The leading hero, Piers Gedrick Atherton, needs to marry out of duty not love. He has scars on the outside and inside but if a woman as beautiful as Lady Alexandra is willing to marry him who is he to say no. What starts out contractual turns into real feelings and care for each other. However, Alexandra’s secrets causes a rift between them and threatens their lives.

How did she prefer him? The hunter, predatory and insolent? Or the duke, charismatic, sleek, and cunning?

How to Love a Duke in Ten Days is filled with a cast of wonderful characters. Even though Lady Alexander’s past hinders her in many ways it doesn’t keep her from being a strong and educated woman. The loyalty and love between her and her two friends is admirable. Piers was handsome, strong and absolutely swoon worthy. From his declarations to Alexander and his tender approach to her, he was wasn’t perfect but he admitted his faults, and all of this made him such a strong hero.

“I sometimes forget..” he murmured as though to himself.
[..]” Forget what?”
“How beautiful you are.”[…] “Then I see you and realize that memory cannot compare to reality. I’m left as breathless as the first time we met.”

This historical romance with a dash of mystery had me enthralled from the prologue and I enjoyed every moment of it. I am really looking forward to the next book in the series.
