All I wanted was a little trouble. Okay, so maybe choosing Cruz Donovan’s 18th birthday party wasn’t the way to go about it. Three years ago, I fell for him. I thought he fell for me too. But when he broke it off, he took my heart and, as if that wasn’t enough, he took my best friends too.
They aren’t the same boys I knew before high school started. They’ve got all kinds of secrets they’re keeping from me. If I want back in, I’ve got to be ready to play their game. I might be a killer soccer player, but I’m not real eager to join a team when they won’t tell me who the opponent is, how to score a goal, or what rules I’m supposed to be following.
I’m in the wrong place at the wrong time, a pawn in games I don’t understand. Maybe I never should have gone looking for trouble in the first place. Is it too late to change my mind?

[I received a digital arc for an honest review]
Defiance Falls is the first book in Di fiance Falls trilogy by Ali Dean. I really enjoyed Dean’s previous releases The Line Below and Kick. She really knows how to write strong athletic females who you can’t help but like and admire.
“I was being accepted, on some level, but I also recognized I wasn’t an insider in this circle. I didn’t know if i ever would be.“
Hazel is about to start her senior year of high school. She has spent the last three years focused on her soccer career and keeping her 4.0 GPA but now she needs a break. She also misses the group of boys she used to hang out with before high school, which included her cousins and her ex Cruz. On the night of Cruz’s birthday she finds herself being dragged back into the boys’ inner circle. Her emotional and physical connection to Cruz is as presents as it ever was, but she’s hesitant to accept his affection. She quickly realizes that everyone is keeping secrets from her, and she can’t decide if they actually want to hang with her or if they just want to protect her. There are a lot of shady things going on between the big families of Defiance Falls, and she finds herself right in the middle of it.
“No, Hazel. This isn’t a game. We aren’t playing at anything. What’s between us is real. It always has been.“
Defiance Falls has an interesting story line. Secrets are being kept from Hazel everywhere she turns. The biggest question is Why Now? and what the heck is actually going on. No worries you don’t find out in this book, and I was left a bit confused and not a positive confused. I wish there was just a bit of closure before the cliffhanger but maybe that’s just me. The characters are all likable. My favorites were actually Hazel’s cousins they were fun and charming, and I would totally read a book based solely on them. Hazel was strong and focused and It was enjoyable to see her push out of her usual routine but still keep her head on straight. However, she really must have been self absorbed before now to not realize what was going on around her. I liked Cruz he was your typical protective, super possessive over his girl type of bad boy. The two had really great chemistry when Hazel wasn’t fighting against her feelings.
“Why did everything with Cruz seem temporary but also frighteningly permanent?“
Overall Defiance Falls was a satisfying read and I’m looking forward to the rest of the series because this ends on a cliff hanger. If you liked the Fallen Crest High series than I think you’ll like this one too.
