On The Run by May Archer
Whispering Key, Book 2
I was supposed to be partying with a bunch of celebrities in paradise this week, okay?
But then I made one teeny, tiny error in judgement before leaving New York, and suddenly the paparazzi expected me to give a command performance as “the other man” in their straight celebrity “outing” of the week.
Um, no, precious. So much no.
Instead, I did what any self-respecting, secret-keeping man would do in that situation: I cancelled my trip and fled New York to hide out in the last place anyone would look for me–a weird little Florida island where nothing exciting ever happened.
Or at least it didn’t… until I arrived.
Now I find myself shacked up with my fake boyfriend Beale Goodman, Whispering Key’s most adorable, most enormous, most virginal cinnamon roll—a guy who rescues feral cats, believes in soulmates, and talks about happiness like it’s free for the taking.
A guy who nearly convinces me, with every smile and kiss, that it is.
Stranger still? I find myself falling for the people on the island. Fitting in, instead of sticking out. Making, you know… friends. And for the first time ever, I think I’ve found something I want to run to, rather than from…
As long as I can keep my secrets from catching up with me.
“Yes, Trey and I know each other from camp,” Beale told his brothers. “It’s not a big deal.”
“We bonded over shared interests.” I sighed happily, settling into the lie. “It was magical.”
Rafe looked at me in my crop top and then at Beale, who was still damp with sweat from his run. “Which interests would those be?”
“Er…” Shit. Like Icarus, I had flown too close to the sun, and I was about to get caught. “Like…”
“Animal rescue,” Beale said smoothly.
“Animal rescue.” Rafe’s frown deepened. “Really?”
“Totes.” I nodded. “We save people from animals at all hours of the day or night. Especially murder cats. We live for it.”
“You mean we save animals,” Beale corrected.
Shit. “Isn’t that what I said? Ha. Silly me. Again. Yes. Obviously that’s what I meant. Beneath this current-season Calvin Klein top beats the heart of an animal lover.”
Beale shot me a look that said, You’d better not be thinking of steak au poivre when you say that, and I pursed my lips because maybe I had been and maybe I hadn’t, and that was none of his beeswax.

[I received a digital arc for an honest review]
May Archer does it again. Another wonderful small town romance that brings all the smiles and all the feels.
Toby needs to go into hiding to avoid outing a celebrity and unmasked his own hiding occupation as a gossip columnist. His only option is to turn to his only and best friend Mason at his new home in the small town of Whispering Key Florida. Except Mason isn’t home and his house sitting is a handsome horoscope believing giant of a man Beale. Next thing he knows his name becomes Trey, he’s Beale’s fake boyfriend and the lies keep piling up. To make the situation even more complicated Toby and Beale find themselves attracted to each other and decide to give in and make the best of the situation. But when Toby’s NYC troubles catch up to him can they make their fake relationship real or will it all fall apart?
“I felt ultra powerful and helpless at the same time because he was so goddamn beautiful and I want him endlessly.”
I fell a little bit in love with Beale when he was introduced in the first Whispering Keys book but I fell all the way right from the start of this one. He is the optimal good guy. He believes that he will find his soulmate, embraces the fact that he’s a Virgo and authentically kind. Although Toby does not appear to fit into Beale’s idea of who his soulmate should be, he ends up being so much more , a defender and a confidant. Beale takes to his physical relationship with Toby like a plover to water (haha yes, I’m quite funny) because there is so much feeling, even if they aren’t able to identify it at first, with every kiss, touch and more. Toby helps Beale tap into a side of himself that he never knew existed and that side totally excelled at dirty talk 😉
“And Beale laughed as he kissed me. God, every time he touched me was better than the time before, which was amazing and scary and… really amazingly scary.”
Toby is a mess. A well put together and high functioning mess but a mess nonetheless and I found him utterly entertaining. He was over the top but genuine and my heart swelled when he would stand up to Beale when others underestimated him or talked down to him. However, Toby struggles to reel in his brash attitude towards sex with Beale and I feel he pushed to the point that I felt like he was pressuring Beale and that didn’t sit right with me. But Toby redeems himself by trying to make the situation better for Beale even if it breaks his heart in the meantime. When Toby’s tough outer shell of inappropriate humor and avoidance breaks you can’t help but want to hug him.
“Toby Elford was a snarky little rain cloud of a human, and it shouldn’t have been possible for him to light up my days, but he did.”
On the Run is a great addition to a fantastic series. The town of Whispering Key is a small town with lovable, slightly crazy townspeople, and ridiculous situations including murder cats and murder pools that are bound to make you chuckle. They quickly embraced Toby as one of their own and was there for him even when he didn’t feel he deserved it. This story had some pretty significant insta-lust leading to love vibes but I just couldn’t stop myself from falling in love with Beale and Toby.
