The Devil is in the details . . .

Marriage and Murder, an-all new quirky and witty cozy mystery and second book in the Solving for Pie: Cletus and Jenn Mysteries from New York Times bestselling author Penny Reid is available now!

Cletus Byron Winston wishes to marry Jennifer Anne Donner-Sylvester (aka The Banana Cake Queen) posthaste! He’s spent the last year wanting nothing more than for the celebrations to be brief, libations flowing, and BYOB (bring your own blueberries). His future mother-in-law has other plans, plans his intended has been willing to indulge, much to Cletus’s chagrin. Therefore, so must he. To a point. But truth be told, he wouldn’t mind if the meddlesome matriarch disappeared, at least until the nuptials are over.

On the night of Cletus and Jenn’s long-awaited engagement party, just when the surly schemer is of a mind to take matters into his own hands, a shocking event upends everyone’s best laid plans and sends the small hamlet of Green Valley into complete disarray. The final months leading up to Cletus and Jenn’s matrimonial bliss are plagued with chaos and uncertainty. Will Cletus and Jenn finally make it to the altar? Or will murder and mayhem derail their happily-ever-after?

And most importantly, who done it?

‘Marriage and Murder’ is the second book in the cozy mystery series Solving for Pie: Cletus and Jenn Mysteries. It is best read after Winston Brothers #3, ‘Beard Science’ (which can be read as a standalone) and Solving for Pie: Cletus and Jenn Mysteries #1, ‘Engagement and Espionage.’

[I received a digital arc for an honest review]

Marriage and Murder is book 2 in the Solving for Pie: Cletus and Jenn Mysteries by Penny Reid and picks up after Cletus and Jenn get engaged in the first book. Cletus is less than thrilled with all the pomp and circumstance going around with engagement parties, showers and celebrations all in order for him to marry the love of his life Jennifer Sylvester. Jenn is taking a back seat and letting her mother and the Winston’s show their love by planning an extravagant wedding. All merriment comes to a screeching halt when a prominent person from their past is viciously murdered and everyone is a suspect. Cletus is on the case while still trying to support Jenn and work towards saying I Do. Will this horrible occurrence prevent Cletus and Jenn’s happily ever after or will the sleuthing duo be able to solve this crime just in time to cut the cake? Cletus Winston has allowed himself to be so very distracted by the engagement and upcoming nuptials that he has been slacking on keeping up with his family and the town of Green Valley. He is off kilter but manages to still pull Jenn close and keep her his main focus. This book packs a punch in the steamy scenes right off the bat and keeps you fanning yourself throughout. I love seeing Cletus and Jenn being intimate because no matter how hot it gets there is an under layer of sweetness that cannot be denied.

Because when I saw Jenn, I saw all of her, all versions of her, and all our history, and all the wondrous and frightening possibilities of our future.

Jennifer Sylvester has been trying so hard to keep everyone in her life happy with the upcoming wedding. But there is unrest in Green Valley and Jenn is at the center of it. She is able to rely on Cletus and her friends in the town to support her as she goes through the struggles that arise in this story. She realizes how much the Winstons and their partners are there to support her and their connections continue to strengthen. Jenn lets herself want Cletus‘ mind, body and affection and opens up to the idea that she can be a little needy for Cletus and it’s better than okay.

It was, he was, I was, life was perfection. For those endless moments, perfection. My body felt so beautiful and powerful. Everything in balance.

Marriage and Murder felt like Penny Reid at her finest. There were moments that I laughed so hard at the antics of Cletus, Jenn, the Winstons and the townsfolk of Green Valley and moments of genuine sadness while the characters struggled. This book brought some important information to light regarding the Sylvester clan and I won’t spoil it for you but I’m hoping for even more of one character in the future. This story flowed and continued to surprise you while you tried to solve the whodunit along with Cletus and Jenn.

4.5 stars for Cletus and Jenn’s adventure to the altar and all the bumps and bullets along the way.
