Dare You, the first book in the all new sexy and playful Dare to Try Trilogy from USA Today bestselling authors Ella Frank and Brooke Blaine is available now!
From Ella Frank’s Prime Time series and Brooke Blaine’s South Haven series comes an explosive spin-off of both worlds.
Sebastian “Bash” Vogel, the magnetic, cross-dressing CEO of AnaVoge, has long been a lone island when it comes to his personal life. Self-assured and playful, he’s never left wanting for suitors—but Bash isn’t looking for something permanent. He’s more than fulfilled with his company and his closest friends, and no one is going to shake up the status quo.
That is, until he’s thrown over the shoulder of one of Chicago’s finest and hauled out of a burning building.
Kieran Bailey, a sexy, hardworking lieutenant at Station 73, has been reaping the rewards of being crowned the city’s hottest fireman, which his crew never lets him forget. So many ladies, so little time. So when he rescues the latest damsel in distress, no one is more shocked than him to realize he’s played prince charming to another…prince.
But Bash isn’t like anyone Kieran has ever met, and soon his world is turned upside down as he becomes more intrigued by the enigmatic man that he can’t stay away from.
They’re from two different worlds. This could never work. But what if…they dared to try?
Dare You is book one of the Dare to Try trilogy, which must be read in order. Prior reading is not required, but is always a fantastic idea for maximum enjoyment.

This was supposed to be a Review Smash between Katie and me but since our opinions were different enough to make that tricky, so here’s a double review. Enjoy !
“Touch me, lieutenant, I dare you.”
Dare You is the first book in the Dare to Try trilogy by Ella Frank and Brooke Blaine. It’s a spin-off of Ella Frank’s Prime Time series and Brooke Blaine’s South Haven series. As someone who has read neither of those books, I can say it’s just fine to read this without having read them. But, as a newbie to Ella Frank I wasn’t aware this was going to be a trilogy centered around one couple with “cliffhangers” for the endings of books 1 and 2. Lesson learned, Amanda, lesson learned.
Kieran Bailey is a straight firefighter lieutenant whose life, is changed the night he saves Sebastian “Bash” Vogel from a fire. Bash is unapologetically gay, a bright personality, confident and loathes the idea of wearing a pair of jeans. Bash is immediately attracted to Kieran and even though he knows it’s a horrible idea to go falling for a straight man, he can’t help himself from reaching out to Kieran. The two form a friendship that cross the line into more when Kieran acknowledges his attraction to Bash. However, Kieran holds strong to his not gay label outside of the bubble he’s created with Bash.
For not having read either author before, I am happy to say that enjoyed the writing style and the ability to create a spin-off series that didn’t leave me confused by the side characters. The characters had depth and the conversations and interactions flowed well. I absolutely loved Bash from the moment we meet him. His confidence was inspiring, and I couldn’t get enough of his flirty banter with Kieran. Kieran sadly was not my favorite variety of main character. His inner struggle with finding Bash attractive was believable, but I have no sympathy for someone ashamed to even admit to hanging out with someone in case others might get the wrong idea 😡 I will admit though when it was just Bash and Kieran one on one he was sweet and endearing. They have a slow build up to their intimacy that ends up being well worth the wait.
Personal preference : I loathe cliffhangers 😂 so of course I didn’t like how this one abruptly ended. Now I shall not so patiently wait for the next book and pray that Kieran redeems himself in book 2.
[I received a digital arc for an honest review]
Dare You by Ella Frank and Brooke Blaine is the start to a cross-over series connecting Ella Frank’s Primetime series and Brooke Blaine’s South Haven series. Kieran Bailey is a hotshot firefighter living in Chicago with a great crew of family and friends. He rescues a damsel in distress from a hotel fire and is shocked when his damsel turns out to be someone completely unexpected. Sebastian “Bash” Vogel is in Chicago for business and while introducing himself to queer society is almost hurt in a large hotel fire. His rescuer turns out to be far more interesting than Bash expected and he finds himself coming up with reasons to see Kieran again and again. Kieran isn’t interested in more than friendship which Bash accepts until the lines get blurred.
Sebastian “Bash” Vogel is fabulous. He is comfortable in his own skin and lives his life out loud and exactly how he wants to. He knows it’s a mistake to flirt and even worse start to fall for the straight guy but there is something about Kieran he can’t ignore. I love that Bash has the support of his found family and even starts to connect with the Chicago crew. He is a private man who appreciates his life staying offline but finds himself opening up and sharing more of himself than usual with Kieran.
“I braced myself, but the next thing I knew, Kieran slammed his mouth down on top of mine in a brutal kiss. It was hard and rough and fueled by the fury that had brought him here in the first place. I brought my hands up to his chest, not sure if I should push him away or pull him closer.”
Kieran Bailey is a confident man when it comes to his prowess with the ladies but is thrown when he saves Bash from the fire. Bash brings out an entirely new side that Kieran never expected from himself. He is an important member of the Bailey clan and has the support of his brothers and their lovers but finds himself keeping Bash to himself. Their connection when he gives in is so powerful that all the little details of sexuality seem to fall by the wayside for Kieran.
“There is something so supremely attractive about a man who could walk into a room and command it, and oh my could Kieran walk into a room. He had this kind of… swagger about him. It was cool, casual, and filled with so much confidence that you knew this guy was the real deal.”
I was excited to hear there was going to be a cross-over between the worlds created by Ella Frank and Brooke Blaine as a big fan of their co-written series. With all the cameos from past series I was just in heaven looking for little easter eggs. I should have expected the ending but it still hurt my heart and now I’m impatiently waiting for the next book.
4 stars for a firefighter meeting his unexpected match.
