[I received a digital arc for an honest review]

What We May Be is a new suspenseful romance by Layla Reyne where three lost souls are brought back together under dire circumstances. Sean Hale left his life behind in Hanover when he walked away ten years to be there for ones he loves while protecting his partners, Charlie and Trevor. Tragedy strikes, bringing Sean back and into his lovers’ lives when they were truly getting ready to move on. With murders occurring that appear directly related to Charlie and Trevor, Sean struggles to stay away and finds himself being drawn back into their lives and their hearts. But history is hard to forget when there is so much hurt burying what they once had and the three must decide to put their family first before tragedy strikes again.

Sean Hale, Charlie Henby and Trevor Caldwell are all bruised after their unexpected breakup ten years prior. Sean buried himself in work and hiding from those he loves the most. Charlie lets her job take over so she can force the hurt to the back burner and Trevor tries to move on and find someone new to love in place of the two irreplaceable shadows from his past. When a very targeted spree of murders falls at Charlie’s feet she is forced to work with Sean and protect Trevor all while trying to keep secrets from coming to the surface. Their physical reaction to each other is just as passionate as before but the three hesitate to open up and broach the pain of their shared past. Once everything is laid bare the three’s connection only strengthens and encourages each to be honest about their shared future.

“They stayed curled together for several long minutes, wrapped in each other’s arms, grieving the time they’d lost, mourning good intentions that resulted in pain and anguish, and yet acclimating to a fresh sort of peace that was settling now that the truth was out there.”

I have read quite a bit of Layla Reyne so when this book was announced I was intrigued by the premise of a poly-relationship involving Sean, a character who had piqued my interest in prior books. The book was a great balance of murder mystery involving the small town of Hanover and the romantic storyline of the three drastically different characters. The intimate scenes were fan your face steamy and the sweet moments between the members of the triad were comforting especially as the murders hit closer to home. With a great collection of secondary characters to help the MCs on their journey back to each other and solving the crime, the story felt well developed and paced.

4 stars for a murder mystery bringing three lost souls back to each other.
