About Wrecked But Not Ruined

I had everything. I was going to college and having a blast. Enjoying myself and not taking much seriously. But then, two years ago, everything changed.

A car wreck destroyed my life. It sent me into a total tailspin. I walked away, even when everyone said I wouldn’t be able to.

But I haven’t recovered from it.

The only thing I have left is my best friend, but I’m sure he’ll give up on me soon. Even so, I can’t fight the truth . . . I’m irrevocably ruined.

College is coming to an end, and I couldn’t be happier to finally start my real life.

Ethan and I had plans. So many amazing plans. And then, everything changed. He was in a horrific wreck, but he miraculously survived. Except it took a piece of him.

I’ve tried to help him get it back. Tried to get him to go to a trauma support group and come back to me.

He thinks he’s broken, but I know the real Ethan is still there. The brave, outgoing man I’ve known my entire life. And I’m going to help him see the truth. That he can overcome this.

That he may have been a little wrecked, but he wasn’t ruined.

[I received a digital arc for an honest review]

Wrecked but not Ruined by Nicole Dykes is the third book in the Spark of Hope series. Ethan had his entire world turned upside down after a car accident took away his ability to travel by car. Although not physically injured in the accident he is unable to get over the mental roadblocks he feels every time he even considers getting in the car. He has adjusted his life accordingly and has started to rebuild to suit his trauma. The one change he never sees is the unwavering support of his best friend and roommate, Knox. Knox refuses to allow anything to change between him and Ethan after the accident. It isn’t until Ethan approaches Knox with a completely unexpected request that the two look towards a future that neither could have seen coming.

Ethan has survived a traumatic experience but struggles to see his experience as significant in comparison to so many in the Spark of Hope support group. He has adjusted his life according to his inability to get into vehicles and has even started building a new friend group with the guys at the gym and their partners. Ethan finds himself looking at Knox differently after a dream opens his mind to the possibility of even more from their relationship. He finds himself wanting to work towards getting better to be worthy of Knox. He refuses to see life in labels and only wants to see how far this new chapter can go with Knox.

I don’t know what this is to him exactly, but I know I’m going to do what I can to show him I can be it for him. I’ll treat him right, and I won’t hurt him like those past assholes. I can be good enough for Knox. And I will.

Knox has been a rock for Ethan and refuses to see him as anything but the wonderful man he’s always known. He knows Ethan is working through his trauma on his own schedule but hopes that the support group at the gym can give him the push towards healing. Knox is fearful when Ethan tries to redefine their friendship as he’s been burned in the past by romantic partners. He can’t imagine losing Ethan and tries to keep him at arm’s length and when that fails to take things as slow as possible. He struggles because his identity as a gay man is important and he refuses to be used and disposed of as an experiment. Ethan has never been anything but his best friend but Knox’s fears and past leave him hesitant towards change.

I love this man. This beautiful man who feels a little wrecked but is definitely not ruined. Not even close.

Ethan and Knox’s story is a great addition to the Spark of Hope series because it shows a different type of trauma. Dykes is able to embody two men working through their own pasts towards a future together. The road is rocky because both men need to learn to trust in each other outside of friendship. The reader sees supporting characters reach out to give both Ethan and Knox shoulders to lean on and an open mind.

4 stars for Ethan and Knox’s journey past the wreck and into a future together.
