Travis is way too uptight. I don’t know why. He has everything a guy could want—a steady job and friends who would do anything for him. A great simple, small-town life. But I guess that’s not what he wants.
He’s always been different. Better. Smarter. Stronger.
Still, I find myself wanting to show him everything he’s dreamed of is within his grasp. That he doesn’t have to be so serious all the time. That he can be himself wherever he is, and I’ll back him up.

Defender by Nicole Dykes is the newest book in the Kensley Panthers series. Travis Wyatt never expected his life after high school would be working in landscaping with his best friend and two guys he played football with. He is beyond frustrated that he can’t start living his dream of college and travel. Oakley Easton couldn’t be happier spending his days landscaping and his evenings living next door to his best friend and his boyfriend. Oakley just wants to see Travis relax and live a little so he proposes they enjoy some time together. Travis can’t see anything good coming from hooking up with Oakley but decides to throw caution to the wind and give it a go. What he doesn’t expect is that there is a whole lot more to Oakley than Travis could have ever imagined and falling for him is easy. But with two totally different futures planned can Oakley and Travis really be anything more than a good time for now.
Travis Wyatt is a little uptight. I loved his grumpy demeanor especially in comparison to Oakley’s sunshiny ways. He hesitates to agree to anything with Oakley at first since he doesn’t want to take advantage of Oakley being a nice guy who may not know what he is getting into. It doesn’t take long though for Travis to realize that Oakley wants to make people happy and Travis makes him so very happy in a lot of ways. The two find chemistry in the bedroom but also turn out to be effective partners in the outside world as well.
To say Travis Wyatt is beautiful would be an understatement.
Oakley Easton is just a lovable goofball who wants to have a good time living simply. He doesn’t examine why he finds himself attracted to Travis and decides that he just wants to explore this new found side of himself. Oakley manages to allow Travis the slow discovery he yearns for when it comes to intimacy and gives himself an opportunity to experience it as well. He finds himself trying to give Travis everything he desires even if it negatively impacts his own feelings.
Because that’s just Oakley. He’s so free in that way. He can be himself whenever he wants. Loud as he wants. And it’s contagious.
This grumpy/sunshine novel was a quick and enjoyable read for me. I loved Oakley and Travis’ back and forth. Seeing the two men learn together how nice simple living can be just made me so happy. Oakley’s love for Pinterest obviously resonated with the inner crafter in me so I loved seeing what he wants to try next. With Garrison and Jameson providing humor and support, Travis and Oakley find their new normal embraced.
4 stars for Oakley’s sunshine bringing Travis a whole new perspective.
